Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Corp. Satya Nadella is placing a wager that a new generation of computers featuring quicker performance and specialized artificial intelligence chips would reignite the long-standing battle between Mac computers and Windows PCs.

“Apple has done a fantastic job,” Nadella declared on Monday in a Bloomberg Television interview. “We now want to revive a true Windows vs. Mac competition.”

Microsoft introduced Copilot+PC, a new category of AI-focused PCs. The company said that computers from Microsoft’s Surface line and other manufacturers will be more powerful and 58% faster than Apple’s top-of-the-line MacBook Air M3, in part because of a processor specifically designed for AI processing. Starting at $1,000, the new gear will be shipped on June 18.

Although Apple is lagging behind its Big Tech competitors in AI, it is set to unveil a bold plan at its Worldwide Developers Conference the following month. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, the business is putting high-end CPUs, which are comparable to the ones it designed for the Mac, in cloud computing servers that are made to handle the most complex AI jobs that are coming to Apple devices. On iPhones, iPads, and Macs, simpler AI-related features will be processed immediately.

Apple will prioritize components that facilitate consumers’ daily lives, such as personalized experiences and recommendation engines.

Microsoft is taking advantage of its partnership with top AI startup OpenAI to establish a head start in the rapidly emerging market for generative AI services. However, the relationship is being examined by the authorities. Authorities from the US, Europe, and the UK are studying Microsoft’s and its competitors’ AI investments to see if they affect competition or need to be governed more like mergers.

According to Nadella, rather than limiting competition in the emerging area, his company’s collaborations encourage more of it.

“You do realize how fierce the competition is these days?” he asked. Whether there is a dispute between major or minor players. Therefore, I believe that the true issue here is competition rather than the acquisition or nonacquisition of any one company.
