This was SpaceX’s second flight in less than a day, as the corporation launched another batch of its Starlink broadband satellites from Florida on Wednesday night, May 22.
Launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 10:35 p.m. EDT (0235 GMT on May 23), a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 Starlink spacecraft emerged.
After landing on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas, positioned in the Atlantic Ocean, the first stage of the Falcon 9 returned to Earth around eight minutes after launch.
As to the SpaceX mission description, this was the eighth launch and landing for that specific first stage. Its seven prior liftoffs included the Ax-2 and Ax-3 private astronaut trips to the International Space Station, as well as three Starlink missions.
The 23 Starlink satellites were transported to low Earth orbit (LEO) by the Falcon 9’s upper stage, and they were scheduled to be deployed approximately 65 minutes following liftoff.
SpaceX launched its second rocket of the day on Wednesday night. The business launched a group of satellites for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office into orbit early in the morning as part of the NROL-146 mission from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base.
That was the 52nd orbital launch for SpaceX so far this year. Thirty-six of those missions have gone toward expanding the massive Starlink megaconstellation, which now numbers around 5,950 operational satellites.
