One of the early criticisms of Google’s Tensor-powered Pixel devices revolved around the Samsung modem used in the initial generations, which struggled with issues like overheating and subpar signal performance compared to alternatives. While Google has made strides in improving these aspects over time, a new report suggests that the upcoming Pixel 10 will feature a significant change: the inclusion of a MediaTek modem.

The Pixel 6, Google’s debut device featuring the Tensor chip, was plagued by frequent complaints about the Samsung modem, particularly around heat management and poor network reception. Although the Pixel 7’s Tensor G2 and subsequent iterations, like Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8 and Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9, addressed some of these concerns, the modem performance has consistently lagged behind that of competing devices. Google has admitted internally that the most common cause of Pixel phone returns has been overheating.

As Google moves away from utilizing Samsung to produce its Pixel 10 chipset, there has been much speculation that the firm may also move to a different modem supplier. Reports from Android Authority confirm that Google explored multiple options, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75, but has ultimately chosen a modem from MediaTek for the Pixel 10 series.

In particular, it is anticipated that Google would make use of the MediaTek T900, an upcoming modem built on MediaTek’s M85 generation. This modem is anticipated to support the forthcoming 3GPP Release 17 5G standard, though the full details of its capabilities remain unknown.

While it’s unclear how the MediaTek T900 will perform compared to existing options, Google’s decision likely reflects a belief that this modem offers meaningful improvements over Samsung’s offerings. Documents hint that Google’s focus on better battery life may have played a critical role, with MediaTek’s modem potentially delivering greater energy efficiency. Cost considerations also appear to have influenced the move, as MediaTek is often more affordable than Qualcomm, even if the latter’s modems might outperform in certain areas.
