Group chats will be added to Threads by Meta, enabling users to message several friends in a shared conversation rather than sending individual direct messages. Users of Threads have the option to add up to 50 people to a group chat by creating a new message. The name of the group chat can be changed to make it more easily recognized by participants or topic, just like Facebook Messenger group messages do.
The UK and Australia are not yet included in the global rollout of group chat features, but Meta spokesperson Alec Booker stated that the company is striving to bring messaging to these regions “as quickly as possible.”
Improved inbox management features and the ability for Threads users to invite others to group conversations by sharing a link rather than adding each person to the conversation individually are two upcoming features.
The introduction of group messaging comes as Threads plans to bring messaging features to the EU “over the next few days,” enabling group conversations and individual direct messages.
