Spotify has long served as a platform where users listen to podcasts created by others. Now, the company is aiming to transform that experience by launching a personal podcast feature powered by artificial intelligence, allowing users to generate custom podcasts based on their own ideas or prompts.
Earlier this month, Spotify introduced a GitHub-based command-line tool for Claude Code and Codex that enables users to create podcasts and save them directly to their Spotify library. The company also revealed that users will soon be able to generate podcasts directly within the Spotify app itself. In addition, they will have the option to schedule podcasts as daily or weekly briefings for subjects they regularly follow. Users can also create one-time podcasts to quickly understand specific topics.
People can submit prompts such as “Share my daily city updates, and tell me about local concerts from artists I love,” or “Help me understand economics in five minutes,” to generate podcasts that are automatically saved to their personal library for listening later.
Additionally, Spotify will allow users to upload links, PDFs, and text files while also selecting custom voices for podcast generation. With this move, the company appears to be taking inspiration from platforms like NotebookLM, ElevenLabs Reader, and Huxe — an app developed by former NotebookLM creators — to enable personalized AI-generated podcasts on virtually any subject.
Spotify has also launched a standalone desktop application called Studio by Spotify Labs, which can connect with users’ email accounts and calendars to create customised briefings.
At the same time, the company is rolling out an AI-powered Q&A feature for Premium mobile subscribers in the United States, Sweden, and Ireland. The feature allows listeners to ask questions about the podcast episode they are currently hearing or about specific concepts mentioned within it and receive instant answers. Users can also request podcast recommendations related to certain topics. The latest update arrives shortly after Spotify launched a prompt-based tool in April that lets users create podcast playlists.
Until now, Spotify has heavily focused on encouraging users to watch more video podcasts. According to the company, the number of users streaming video podcasts increased by 50% year-over-year. With these new tools, Spotify is aiming to increase engagement within the app by enabling listeners to interact with podcast content through questions and by creating personalised podcasts based on their own interests. The feature resembles Google’s Ask YouTube tool, which was introduced earlier this week.
For podcast creators, Spotify is also expanding its creator sponsorship platform to help manage brand partnerships. Additionally, the company is introducing subscription-based tools that allow creators to charge users for access to exclusive content and experiences. Similar features are already available on social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Snap.
