Meta’s social media platform Instagram has introduced a series of updates, including extending the length of Reels, revamping profile grids, and adding a new section on the Reels tab to showcase videos liked by friends. Additionally, Instagram has announced the launch of a new video editing app called “Edits.” These updates aim to enhance user experience and provide more creative tools for content creation and sharing.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, shared in a post that users can now upload Reels lasting up to three minutes. This decision follows user feedback, which suggested that the previous 90-second limit was too restrictive for those who wanted to share more extended content. While Instagram has allowed longer videos to be posted as regular uploads, this change aligns with the platform’s efforts to make Reels a more versatile format.

In another update, Mosseri revealed through an Instagram Story that the profile grid is being redesigned to display content as rectangles instead of squares. This adjustment reflects the growing popularity of vertically oriented uploads on the platform. He expressed confidence that users would appreciate the change over time, as it allows more of their photos and videos to appear as they were intended, without aggressive cropping.

Instagram has also introduced a new section within the Reels tab that highlights videos liked by friends. According to Mosseri, this feature enables users to see a dedicated feed of Reels that their friends have interacted with. It also makes it easier to engage in conversations about these videos directly from the same section. The feature will initially roll out in select regions before becoming available globally.

Alongside these updates, Instagram has announced its new video editing app, “Edits.” Mosseri described the app as offering a comprehensive suite of tools designed to enhance creativity. Features include a space for inspiration and idea tracking, support for higher-quality video editing, and the ability to collaborate on drafts by sharing them with others. Additionally, the app will provide insights into video performance on Instagram. Although “Edits” is not yet available on the Google Play Store, it is open for pre-registration on the Apple App Store and is expected to launch on March 13.
